Shake Rag Alley Lodging
Since reopening our 2.5-acre campus to the public in June 2020, we’ve adjusted the way we safely operate several times as the COVID-19 pandemic has evolved.
We have updated our procedures across the board, including but not limited to the following:
• Effective June 1, 2022, face coverings are optional indoors;
• Checking in and out of our spaces are contactless processes.
• We are maintaining a 24-hour housekeeping block on either end of every reservation.
• We have updated our cleaning and sanitizing processes to be more frequent and more thorough.
• Additionally, we have also made hand sanitizer available for your convenience in the high-trafficked areas of our campus.
If you would like to learn more about the changes we’ve made in regard to our workshops and retreats, please refer to our planning your workshop experience page. Relax in the quiet comfort of the spacious living room with dining area and kitchen, bathroom with shower and claw-foot tub, and charming bedroom with comfortable queen bed and romantic sitting nook. Enjoy convenient off-street parking only a few yards away.
Make yourself at home in the spacious main room on large comfy couches surrounded by recycled amenities including original handmade ceramic sculpture, early Mineral Point photographs, handsome stone walls, and beautiful stained glass.
The art-filled kitchen area features a fridge, microwave, coffeemaker, electric hot plate, an antique drop-leaf table and four chairs, and an old-fashioned country sink with a hand-painted backsplash by beloved Mineral Point potter, Bruce Howdle. With leaf-filtered light streaming in the tall, deep windows, you’ll find being in this unusual room a pleasure.
An array of multi-colored 1930s windows fills one wall of the bedroom, a pleasant view from the comfortable queen bed. A small iron table and chairs nearby are just right for morning coffee. And there’s a handy washer/dryer in the hall. The bathroom features an antique corner sink and mirror made from an old iron scale. Between the old claw-food tub and the modern shower is a remarkable wall of masonry “finds,” including fossils, arrowheads, unusual bricks and stone, even lead from the old Mineral Point mines, all collected and mortared into place by the mason whose stone retaining walls enliven the gardens outside.

The brick and stone Sardeson building was built in the commercial vernacular as an addition to the Globe Hotel in 1877. The building has undergone extensive renovations since 2016 when Mineral Point potter and stonemason Roland Sardeson bequeathed the building to Shake Rag Alley Center for the Arts for use as lodging rooms, a pottery studio, and a gallery space. The second-floor studio apartment lovingly decorated and dedicated as Roland’s Loft in May 2018 features modern amenities and historical touches befitting Roland’s unique spirit. The creative community of Mineral Point awaits right outside your door, which is just a five-minute walk from the Shake Rag Alley campus.
