Organics Plus Abstracts: Working in a Series

August 29, 2020

Schedule: Saturday, 9am-4pm

Instructor: Nicole Austin

Registration Deadline: Aug 17

Description

I have a love of combining organic shapes/images (flowers, birds, leaves, etc.) with abstract backgrounds. I even like to throw some geometrics and patterns in there for fun! I’ll show you how to create abstract backgrounds and add organic images and geometric patterns to form something lovely and unique. We’ll learn how to use all my favorite materials and techniques as we create, grow, and just have a good time! You’ll explore acrylic paint, texture paste, paint pens, stamps, stencils, and more. We’ll talk about what colors to use and how to create a pleasing composition.

Materials fee includes a collage pack full of my favorite papers (vintage, recycled, patterned tissue paper, scrapbook paper, etc.) plus shared use of all materials: acrylic paint, acrylic ink, paint pens, stamps, ink, stencils, mark making tools, brushes, texture paste, tissue paper, collage paper, and more!

Level Beginner and above

Class Size 12

– Optional: You may also bring your favorite paint colors, collage images, stencils, stamps, etc. But I will have plenty to share!

Nicole Austin is a mixed-media artist, designer, and instructor from San Jose, CA (currently residing in Tempe, AZ) with a BA in creative arts. “I believe that everyone has a unique style and desire to create and that we are born curious and creative. Over the years, many of us are discouraged from following our creative urges, but I believe it is never too late to begin (or begin again!). I love to encourage my students to draw from their own experience when creating art and to have the courage to take chances. My art is messy, colorful, layered, and fun. I have been drawn to the creative arts since I can remember. My first canvas was pretty much every surface in my grandma’s house: the walls, the books, underneath the marble coffee table in the dining room (she didn’t find out until YEARS later and it remains one of her treasured possessions!). I loved playing school and ‘art gallery’ and my dream was to be an artist and teacher. I love the energy that my students bring to class. I love hearing their stories, guiding them through the fear and frustration, reflecting the joy they experience, and cheering them on while they (re)discover their creative voice.”
