Antiracism Book Club - The Fire Next Time

March 19, 2021

Schedule: 6-7:30 pm Fri

Instructor: New Members Always Welcome

Registration Deadline: March 18

Description

In order to continue the crucial conversations that began during our 2020 NEA Big Read of Claudia Rankine’s award-winning “Citizen: An American Lyric,” Shake Rag Alley is hosting a monthly antiracism book club.

Join us via Zoom to discuss The Fire Next Time, by James Baldwin.

At once a powerful evocation of James Baldwin’s early life in Harlem and a disturbing examination of the consequences of racial injustice, The Fire Next Time is an intensely personal and provocative document. It consists of two “letters,” written on the occasion of the centennial of the Emancipation Proclamation, that exhort Americans, both black and white, to attack the terrible legacy of racism in searing, brilliant prose.
