Registration Deadline: Aug 18

Description

In order to continue the crucial conversations that began during our 2020 NEA Big Read of Claudia Rankine’s award-winning “Citizen: An American Lyric,” Shake Rag Alley is hosting a monthly antiracism book club.

Join us via Zoom to discuss Sundown Towns, by James W. Loewen.

In this groundbreaking work, sociologist James W. Loewen brings to light decades of hidden racial exclusion in America. A provocative, sweeping analysis of American residential patterns, Sundown Towns uncovers the thousands of almost exclusively white towns where it was an unspoken rule that blacks weren’t welcome. Cropping up throughout the 20th century, most sundown towns were outside of the South.
