Junk Journal Deconstruction

June 3-4, 2023

Schedule: 9am-4pm Sat-Sun

Instructor: Nicole Austin

Registration Deadline: May 22

Description

Some call us monsters for ripping up and altering books — I think of us as creatives who can see potential in anything! Gather together with kindred spirits and rip and alter to our hearts’ content! We’ll take a vintage book and turn it into something extraordinary using paint, embellishments, and reconstructive techniques. You bring the book (BYOB!) and I’ll supply the rest! We will deconstruct and reconstruct our books into works of art. We’ll also create unique collage papers for inside our books and explore journaling jumpstarts and background starting techniques!

Materials fee includes assortment of handmade, scrapbook, recycled, vintage papers, embellishments, ephemera, and shared materials: paints, stencils, stamps, stamp ink, oil pastels, texture plates, brushes, mark-making tools, printmaking tools, washi tape, collage images.

Class size 12

Level Beginner and above

Student Supply List
Basic kit: glue stick, scissors, ruler, pencil, X-acto knife, self-healing mat (or super thick cardboard surface), and vintage book (look for intact covers and pages that aren’t flaking or falling apart). Optional: If you have special stamps or stencils, paint, ephemera, collage paper, or collage images, bring them along — but I will have plenty to share!

  • Tuition $275
  • Materials Fee $20

I am a mixed media artist, designer, and instructor from San Jose, CA (currently residing in Tempe, AZ) with a BA in creative arts. I believe that everyone has a unique style and desire to create and that we are born curious and creative. Over the years, many of us are discouraged from following our creative urges, but I believe it is never too late to begin (or begin again!). I love to encourage my students to draw from their own experience when creating art and to have the courage to take chances. My art is messy, colorful, layered, and fun.

I have been drawn to the creative arts since I can remember. My first canvas was pretty much every surface in my grandma’s house: the walls, the books, underneath the marble coffee table in the dining room (she didn’t find out until YEARS later and it remains one of her treasured possessions!). I loved playing school and “art gallery” and my dream was to be an artist and teacher. I love the energy that my students bring to class; I love hearing their stories and guiding them through the fear and frustration and reflecting the joy they experience and cheering them on while they (re)discover their creative voice.
