Stories Beneath the Skin

June 3, 2022

Schedule: 9 am-4 pm Fri

Instructor: Nicole Austin

Registration Deadline: Registration Closed

Description

My portraits all begin with a story. The story is built, layer by layer, with each new technique and feeling. First, I will show you how to conquer the fear of the blank page as we play with various media, focusing on colors, textures, and the present moment. Then, we’ll work on drawing simple and satisfying faces—something that I have developed for both the beginner and intermediate artist alike! (Don’t worry if you’ve never drawn a face or if you hate drawing faces: By the end of this course, you will come away with a newfound confidence and love of portraits!) The last layers will be drawing the face and shading with a variety of techniques to create character and dimension (oil paint sticks, acrylic paint, watercolor, and more). This is where we will play with transparency as we allow some previous layers to “peek” through the face. We will focus on ways to make our portraits come alive. You will come away with several different portraits showing the exact steps of the process (from simple, to the more complex) so that you can easily recreate these again and again.

Materials fee includes shared use of class supplies: oil pastels, oil paint sticks, stabilo pencils, spray inks, acrylic paint, watercolors, color pencils, stencils, collage paper pack, and more!

I am a mixed media artist, designer, and instructor from San Jose, CA (currently residing in Tempe, AZ) with a BA in creative arts. I believe that everyone has a unique style and desire to create and that we are born curious and creative. Over the years, many of us are discouraged from following our creative urges, but I believe it is never too late to begin (or begin again!). I love to encourage my students to draw from their own experience when creating art and to have the courage to take chances. My art is messy, colorful, layered, and fun.

I have been drawn to the creative arts since I can remember. My first canvas was pretty much every surface in my grandma’s house: the walls, the books, underneath the marble coffee table in the dining room (she didn’t find out until YEARS later and it remains one of her treasured possessions!). I loved playing school and “art gallery” and my dream was to be an artist and teacher. I love the energy that my students bring to class; I love hearing their stories and guiding them through the fear and frustration and reflecting the joy they experience and cheering them on while they (re)discover their creative voice.
