Shake Rag Alley is nestled in a small valley in Mineral Point, Wisconsin on traditional lands of the Kiikaapoi (Kickapoo), Sauk and Meskwaki, Ho-Chunk (Winnebago), Myaamia, and Očhéthi Šakówiŋ nations.The picturesque 2.5 acre campus is surrounded by limestone cliffs and enjoys a naturally occurring spring, which provided a source of clean drinking water for humans year round, likely long before the first permanent settlers arrived in Mineral Point around 1827. When Wisconsin was named a territory in 1836, the federal government started selling the land to non-indigenous people, but an Act of Congress reserved this spring for public use. The Federal Spring, also known as the Government Spring, was deemed “unfit for human consumption” in the 1930s, so please don’t drink the water!
