FIBER FAIRE
Saturday September 28, 2024 10am-4pm
Join artists & artisans at Shake Rag Alley Center for the Arts for Fiber Faire 2024! Farmers, fashionistas, and makers will be on hand to share all the wonderful ways we use fiber to express ourselves. Join us for demos, shopping, and a fashion show, all during Mineral Point’s Cornish Festival & Celtic Celebration!
- Fiber Arts Demos:
With craftspeople all over campus, you’ll learn from artists who make by hand, and may be inspired to take up a new craft yourself.
- Shop: Enjoy our market of artisan goods and handmade items just in time for fall. Buy materials for your own projects and talk to knowledgeable craftspeople.
- Fashion Show & Contest: At 3 pm, share your creations in three categories: Classic, Quirktacular, and Upcycle/Recycle. Show off a showpiece of wearable art in our fashion show, and be eligible for cash prizes.
- Rumpelstiltskin Contest: Just for fun, let’s have a spin off! Get a quick-and-dirty spinning lesson, and try a timed heat making your own lumpy yarn! Would you make your grandmother proud? Earn those bragging rights.
General admission is free. This is a rain or shine event.

Fashion show & Contest
Share your creations in three categories: Classic, Quirktacular, and Upcycle/Recycle. Show off a showpiece of wearable art in our fashion show, and be eligible for cash prizes.
Entry Details
- Each entry is for one “runway walk” of wearable art/apparel. The model may be the artist, but need not be. The “runway walk” may be a single item (like a sweater or dress) or an ensemble consisting of multiple pieces. Wearable art/apparel could be clothing items, accessories (including bags), jewelry, etc.
- The judges will respond most strongly to pieces that honor the spirit of the category (see tips below). For example, the Classic category is quite different than the Quirktacular or Upcycle/Recycle category.
- Be sure to arrive & register by 2:30pm (contest begins at 3pm). Walk-in & same-day registrations only.
In each category, a panel of judges will select a noteworthy creation for a cash prize.
Helpful (maybe) hints:
For Classic: think about lacework patterns, classic cables, fair isle, color work, as well as traditional Cornish patterns, like ganseys or knit frocks.
For Quirktacular: think about mixing styles, felted bobbles, costume-inspired looks, non-traditional materials, and boldly going where no one else has gone.
For Upcycle/Recycle, think about remaking materials and clothes into something new—maybe you’re into visible mending, or remaking vintage clothes into something contemporary with a unique twist.
