Building Scene

Whether you write fiction or creative nonfiction, the scene is your tool for bringing the reader deeply into a character’s experience and making a narrative as vivid as possible. Unlike exposition or summary, scenes are rendered moment by moment, and are most useful for dramatizing a pivotal turn or thread.

On Saturday morning, in a small and casual group, we’ll look at the elements of building a vivid scene and also write scenes that draw from what we’ve uncovered. Saturday afternoon is set aside for individual writing and working with exercises. The group will gather again Sunday morning for additional discussion and workshop. Come prepared to read examples, write new material, and share if you’re willing.
